It’s hard to describe. But for the longest time, it felt like I was missing some vital part of me. I would wake up and toss and turn after yet another dream where I met you. I would lie there thinking about everything I did wrong.
The sweater you gave me lay untouched in the closet, but I never intended to throw it away. Your favorite book was gathering dust on the shelf. The photo of us on the refrigerator was already starting to fade in the sun, as we did over the years.
The place that was once ours has seen many other guys now. But I always asked that they not sit where you sat that first time. I still have foods that remind me of you because you were the first one to make me try them.
There’s also the beer I drink with you in my fantasies because it was your favorite.
Your name doesn’t come up in conversations anymore. People stop asking about you. Everyone except me.
