A declaration of love of a different kind is currently making its way around the world and inspiring thousands of people on the Internet. “I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I think I somehow cheated on my wife today.” These are the words that begin the romantic Facebook post by American entertainer Jason Hewlett, who tells how he fell in love with another woman in the supermarket and has now collected over 300,000 likes.
But what is it all about? What initially sounds like a shocking confession from someone who cheated turns out to be a touching message. “Here’s the thing: I was at Target to buy a few (…) things. As I was going to the checkout, I saw this woman in line in front of me who just blew me away. I thought, ‘Wow, some lucky guy is dating her,’ and in a split second, I realized that was my wife! You know, it was just in an unexpected context, seeing my wife in the same store, in the same line. Living her life and having no idea that she was in the same place, at the same time, in a different car.”
Jason reflects on his feelings.
“There was one person in line between us, so I just watched my sweet little darling shopping and sent her text messages like ‘Hey, hottie’ and ‘What are you buying now, babelicious?’. But none of it caught her attention. She was looking for a coupon she had set aside just for this purchase. So I let it go. Of course, I could have easily embarrassed her and jumped out of line (…) but instead I just stood in line in silence and quietly thought about my feelings for this woman. First of all, I was overwhelmed by how beautiful she still is. I think I see this a lot, but today, not knowing she was in the store, I saw her with completely different eyes and just couldn’t believe I was her husband. I blushed—but no one could see that, thanks to my monstrous Movember beard. Second, I was surprised that she didn’t notice me at all. That’s both a good and a bad thing. Good that she’s not looking around for other men. Good that she doesn’t notice the creepy guy with the bushy beard looking over her shoulder. But maybe that’s a bad thing, too. I mean, what if it hadn’t been me? I need to get her another can of pepper spray.”

“But it was also bad because I realized that I was close to giving up. I would never have made her love me. All the effort I had to put in to even get her attention—to make her go out with me! For a moment I felt that familiar sadness before the end, like when I first saw her and immediately knew it was impossible. But somehow I conquered her despite my insecurities, inabilities, and flaws. Third, I was finally so happy to see her in all her self-assurance. As the independent, capable, humble, funny, sweet, loving, and amazing person that she is. And then she picked up her things and walked out the door. I didn’t say a word; I didn’t wave to her.”
“I just watched her walk away, knowing that she is my wife and I love everything about this woman. She hardly ever looks at Facebook, so she probably won’t read this post. She won’t realize that she was cheated on in some way today. But I thought I should share the story with all of you. After all, I am just a normal guy going through life.
