Relationship Advice: When you’re truly in love, your brain does this (who knew?!)

When you’re truly in love, your brain does this (who knew?!) If a person is truly in love, even their physiology will tell you about it! They say that when you’re in love, your knees go weak, and your stomach flutters. But have you ever thought about what your brain does when you find love?

Love is considered an emotion, a feeling, but neurology and brain physiology also play a huge role in developing a strong relationship. When you are truly in love, your brain does this (who knew?!)

How does the brain help maintain relationships? By not noticing the little things.

Biological anthropologist Helen Fisher and neuroscientist Lucy Brown have described how the brain activates “positive illusions” to prolong our happiness by ignoring negative moments and focusing on the positive ones.

In their study, the scientists examined the brain scans of hundreds of people at different stages of love and family relationships. They noticed that people in long-term, happy relationships had three specific areas of the brain that were significantly activated:

  • area associated with compassion, empathy
  • area associated with controlling one’s own emotions and stress
  • area associated with positive illusions

The last section is officially called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. This is the area where judgment is processed: when we criticize something, that’s where it all starts.

Do you know what happens to this part of the brain when we are in love?  Its activity decreases.

When we are in love, our brain decides to suspend the creation of negative judgment.

Isn’t that great?

This does not mean that we should ignore every bad quality in a person or excuse his outright bad behavior.

But this suggests that even at a neurological level, we know that for relationships to be successful, we must tolerate and overlook each other’s shortcomings.

That’s the hardest part, isn’t it?

When you’re together for a long time and almost always, you see each other for who you really are and often not at your best.

But if a person truly loves, then even his physiology will speak of it without judging the partner excessively. In love, we become softer, more compassionate, and more understanding.
